What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED or impotence) is a prevalent condition that impacts a man's ability to attain or maintain an erection during intercourse. Research has shown that by the age of 50, nearly 50 percent of men suffer from sexual performance issues. This figure increases by 10 percent with each decade, so that by age 70, almost 7 out of 10 men suffer from ED. It is important to note that ED itself is not hazardous, but it may be linked to more serious issues such as systematic vascular disease, heart conditions, renal failure, prostate cancer, depression, and more.

If you are or think you are suffering from ED, schedule a consultation with Ellen Vital Clinic to discuss your options for medication and treatment.

How is Erectile Dysfunction Treated?

When it comes to treating erectile dysfunction (ED), the first step is to identify the underlying cause. Once this is established, the appropriate treatment can begin. Non-surgical and surgical options are available to help a man regain normal sexual function. Medications such as sildenafil (Viagra®), vardenafil (Levitra®), or tadalafil (Cialis®) can be used to help improve sexual function by increasing blood flow to the penis. However, men who are taking medicines that contain nitrates such as nitroglycerine should not take these oral ED medications as the combination of nitrates and these specific medications can cause low blood pressure (hypotension). The most common side effects of these medications include indigestion, nasal congestion, flushing, headache and a temporary visual disturbance.
